North Adams Memorial Day Parade and Program on Monday, May 28, 2007

The City of North Adams will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday morning, May 28 with a parade and a speaking program at the Veteran’s Memorial at the corner of Eagle and Center Streets. Formerly known as Decoration Day, this holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who died in military service for their country.

The parade will begin at 9:30 AM at the American Legion, Post 125, travel north on American Legion Drive, east on Main Street and north on Eagle Street to the memorial. All parade participants are requested to be at the American Legion by 9:00 AM. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at the American Legion beginning at 8:30. The parade will include color guards, veterans; North Adams Mayor John Barrett III, public safety units and the historic North Adams Trolley.

The program will feature remarks from Mayor Barrett and Keynote Speaker Colleen Rundell, Head Administrator of the Vermont Veteran’s home in Bennington. The Drury High School Band, under the Direction of Carl Jenkins, will accompany Kaytee Ameen, who will sing “The Star Spangled Banner.” The band will also perform “Let There be Peace on Earth.” Donna Senecal from Girl Scout Troop 23 will recite the Pledge to the Flag. As a special treat, the Gettysburg Address will be recited by Nicole Burdick, an eighth – grade student at Conte Middle School. Nicole is the daughter of Perry and Kimberly Burdick, and will receive the George Angeli Award, presented by North Adams Police Department Sergeant James Burdick. Also included will be opening and closing prayers by Commander Robert Reardon and Commander Louis Floriani, and remarks by National Executive Committeeman for the American Legion, James Army. The firing squad is Company “C” of the 181st Engineers from the Massachusetts Army National Guard, Pittsfield. Taps will be sounded by Steven Felix and Michael LaRocca. The Master of Ceremonies is Past Commander Dennis Pierre, American Legion Post #125.

The Parade and program committee would like to thank the Sons for the American Legion Squadron 125 for passing out flags. The committee would also like to stress that all veterans are welcome to participate in the parade; no group affiliation is necessary.
